Paragliding in Bassano del Grappa: Europe's all-season site

In January, when the rest of Europe's flying sites are frozen, fogged in, or simply dead, there is one place where the landing field is still full of drying gliders and the bars still argue about the day's climbs: Bassano del Grappa. The south slopes of Monte Grappa, at the exact line where the Venetian plain meets the prealps, form what many pilots simply call the most reliable flying site in Europe — and unquestionably its winter capital.

Bassano is where comp pilots keep their edge in December, where schools bring students for their first thermals in February, and where the spring XC season starts weeks before the high Alps wake up. Here's how the site works, and what to know before your first visit.

Why Bassano works so well

The engine is the geography. Monte Grappa's massif is the first wall the sun-warmed air of the Venetian plain meets. All day, heated air from the flatlands — farmland, villages, the works — drifts north and piles onto the south faces. The slopes act as one giant collector, organising plain-heated air into ridge-wide lift. It's the same terrain-driven thermal logic as everywhere else, but supercharged by an enormous, dark, dry heat source that happens to work even in winter.

That's the Bassano secret: the plain produces usable thermals on any clear day with sun, including December and January. The climbs are lower and softer in winter — base at 1,200 m instead of 2,500 m — but they're there, reliably, when nowhere else in the Alps has anything. Combine that with the mild Veneto climate at the landing (200 m altitude), and you get the only major European site where "season" is a strength question, not an on/off question.

The launches

The Panettone — the classic

The main launch is a rounded grassy knoll on the south slope at about 1,000 m — the shape earned it the name Panettone. It's big, forgiving, and faces south/southeast over the Semonzo landing with the whole plain beyond.

Rubbio — the second option

A few kilometres west, the Rubbio launch offers a similar altitude and orientation with a quieter atmosphere, popular when the Panettone is saturated or for pilots working the western part of the wall. Same landing options, same general mechanics.

First visit? Bassano's sky is one of the busiest in Europe — schools, tandems, comp gaggles and visiting pilots from every country, all sharing the same face. The site is professionally managed with clear local rules, launch marshalling on busy days, and a published landing circuit. Get a briefing, read the panels, and fly predictably. The site works because everyone plays by the same rules.

The landing: Semonzo

The official landing at Semonzo is enormous — a flat green complex at the foot of the mountain with windsocks, a dedicated kiting area, and the legendary landing-field bar that anchors the whole scene. The approach is straightforward: established circuit, into the upslope breeze during the day.

Two notes. First, on strong spring afternoons the upslope breeze freshens — normal valley-system behaviour, plan your circuit early. Second, the airspace floor: the plain south of the mountain has controlled airspace connected to the Venice/Treviso traffic — the flying happens along the mountain, not out over the plain. Know the boundaries.

The day-killers: north foehn spilling over the Grappa massif (rotor on the south side — the classic trap, since the landing can look calm), and strong synoptic south flow pressing too hard onto the wall. Check wind at ridge height and above, not just the plain.

Season: when to come

XC from Bassano

The XC geometry is a wall, like Àger's Montsec but longer: the prealpine front runs east-west for over a hundred kilometres, and the plain feeds it everywhere.

The step up from soaring the Panettone to running the wall is mostly about commitment over less-landable wooded slopes between the ridges — the classic lines are well documented, and retrieves along the plain-side roads are easy.

Airspace and rules, briefly

Two layers to respect. First, the local site rules: Bassano is a professionally managed flying site with marked zones, fees, and real enforcement — the local clubs and schools are the authority. Second, the airspace: the Venetian plain hosts controlled airspace tied to Venice and Treviso, with ceilings that matter along the southern edge of the flying area, plus the Istrana military zones west of the site. Check current charts before your first flight rather than trusting a blog post (including this one).

Reading the forecast for Bassano

Bassano sits in ICON-D2's coverage zone (and AROME's eastern edge) — the German model's assimilation is strong here, so use ICON-D2 as primary and cross-check. What to look at:

  1. Wind at ridge height and above (1,500–3,000 m). The decision number. Light gradient = the plain-to-wall machine runs clean. North foehn signature = rotor on the flying side — stand down even if the landing looks calm.
  2. Thermal strength and base through the day. Winter days: expect soft climbs to 1,200–1,500 m — plan modest, enjoyable flights. Spring days: base can jump above 2,000 m and the daily cycle runs at full power.
  3. Overdevelopment in summer. Storms build over the massif and the Asiago plateau on hot unstable afternoons — set a land-by time when CAPE looks juicy.
  4. Convergence. The upslope flow meeting synoptic wind can draw convergence lines along the front — when forecast, the glass-off starts early and the wall works even better than usual.
